I spent the last week of the year in Aspen with my boyfriend’s family. It was absolutely magical. We played games, drank wine, ate so much sushi, cross-country skied, snowboarded, and ran around downtown. I packed a ton of layers and was surprised at how well I kept warm in the 5F-35F degree weather. I’m usually such a wuss when it comes to being cold.

The one thing I didn’t prepare for, however, was how dry my skin got. My hands turned into reptile claws and the skin on my lips and nose are flaking off like croissants. And I can’t do croissants (if anyone finds a gluten-free and dairy-free croissant out there please let me know). While I’ve gone through about 3 huge bottles of lotion for my hands, my lips need a little extra work. Fresh’s Lip Sugar Exfoliant is great for soft, moisturized lips but it costs way too much for a simple lip scrub. So I made my own with a few ingredients I already have in my pantry.

Coconut Skin Scrub

  • 2 tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 tbsp coconut sugar
  • 1 tsp coarse salt

Mix ingredients well in a small bowl. Using a toothbrush or your finger, rub in small circles across your lips. Rinse with warm water and blot with a cloth. Repeat as needed. Store scrub at room temperature in an airtight container.
